DESCRIPTION:The Valley Winds concert band will perform a free joint concert with the Hopkins Westwinds at 4 p.m. on February 16 at the Eastview High School Performing Arts Center. \nThe Valley Winds\, which recently celebrated its first anniversary\, will present a program based on the theme Flight. According to conductor and artistic director Tedd Gullickson\, music that describes the history of flight will be presented along with selections that were commissioned by the United States Air Force. \nThe Winds will perform To Walk With Wings by Julie Girioux\, March of the Belgian Parachutists by Pierre Lemmans and Soaring with John Williams arranged by Robert Smith. They will close with a special performance of the major work To Tame the Perilous Skies. Composer David Holsinger dedicates the piece “to the spirit of the modern military aviator\, taming perilous skies that all might live free of tyranny and oppression.” \nFlight\, by Brian Balmages\, will be guest conducted by the Winds tuba section leader\, Ben Carter\, who directs bands at Eden Prairie High School. Flute soloist Noah Stamboulieh will be featured on Baroque and Blue by Claude Bolling. Member Ann Mikiska states\, “As a flute player in Valley Winds\, I am most excited to listen to fellow flute player\, Noah Stamboulich. I just know his technique and musicality will leave the audience in awe.” \nThe 70-piece Valley Winds are enjoying a busy second season with upcoming concerts in Glencoe\, St. Paul’s Landmark Center and Moorhead. Bassist Mike Maiers says\, “I enjoy the challenge and variety of the music we play. As a relative newcomer to Valley Winds\, I have met many wonderful people who share a passion for excellence and supporting one another.” \nThe Hopkins Westwinds Concert Band will open the concert with a variety of Patriotic Selections including America\, the Beautiful\, The Stars and Stripes Forever and Variations on America. Selections from Wicked will also be performed. Founded in 1983\, the group has over 75 members. Westwinds is led by Mike Anderson\, conductor\, and Emma Hedberg\, associate conductor.

DESCRIPTION:The Valley Winds will present their season two opening concert at 7:30 p.m. on November  6\, at the Eastview High School Performing Arts Center. This free concert will be the first of five by the band this season. \nTitled Songs of the Free\, the concert will include patriotic favorites and a new fanfare commissioned by the Winds. Minneapolis composer Carl Schroeder wrote Flourish for Valley Winds to commemorate the band’s first season. This will be the world premiere performance. \nThe 65-member Valley Winds has members from around the South Metro and as far as Owatonna and Austin. Membership ranges in age from college students to retired folks representing a variety of occupations\, including music teachers\, medical\, tech and engineering professionals.

DESCRIPTION:The Valley Winds will present a concert at 7 p.m. on May 22 at the Eastview High School Performing Arts Center\, 6200 140th St. W.\, Apple Valley. This is the concert band’s second performance after being organized in November. \nThe 65-member ensemble will perform a variety of contemporary and classic wind band literature during the free concert. \nDr. Jerry Luckhardt\, band director at the University of Minnesota\, will guest conduct Rest by Frank Ticheli. Luckhardt also conducts the Medalist Concert Band of Bloomington. Valley Winds associate conductor and co-founder Matt Gullickson will conduct The Wilderness by Rossano Galante. Gullickson directs bands at Eastview. Persuasion\, by Sammy Nestico\, will feature Valley Winds principal saxophonist Vicki Reuter Haack. Haack also serves as the Wind’s vice president. \nPrincipal Conductor and Valley Winds Artistic Director\, Tedd Gullickson\, says the audience can expect an exciting performance. “The Winds will be performing music by Vincent Persichetti and Stephen Melillo\, along with the spiritual\, Let Us Break Bread Together\,” he says . “As a special feature\, music from Puccini’s opera Turandot will conclude the concert.” \nGullickson continues\, “Even though the Valley Winds is a new ensemble\, they are already recognized as an outstanding performance group. They are an amazing group to work with\, wonderful people and amazing musicians.”
