DESCRIPTION:Strap on your boots\, coat\, hat and gloves and head over to Casperson Park for the Youth Ice Fishing Contest. This free event takes place on February 8\, 2025. Youth are invited to fish through one of the many holes cut in the ice just for this occasion. Prizes and trophies will be given out and everyone has a chance to win. \nDon’t let this opportunity to create lifelong memories for your kids pass by. Each year\, members of Lakeville High School Fishing team cut approximately 100 holes in the ice for this event and serve as volunteers helping measure fish as they are pulled out of the lake. Participants need to bring their own fishing equipment and bait. This event is great for the whole family! Should you get a little chilly\, warm yourself by the bonfire with a cup of hot cocoa.

After the hike\, head to the Ed Mako Environmental Learning Center cabin for a complimentary cup of cocoa\, the perfect end to a memorable night under the stars. \nRegistration is required in advance and the event is expected to reach full capacity. The trail will be flat-packed\, but please note that strollers are not advised. Families with young children are encouraged to bring a sled for easy travel along the path and everyone is encouraged to dress in layers and wear appropriate footwear for an outdoor winter event.

Minneapolis composer Carl Schroeder wrote Flourish for Valley Winds to commemorate the band’s first season. This will be the world premiere performance. \nThe 65-member Valley Winds has members from around the South Metro and as far as Owatonna and Austin. Membership ranges in age from college students to retired folks representing a variety of occupations\, including music teachers\, medical\, tech and engineering professionals.

DESCRIPTION:The Valley Winds will present a concert at 7 p.m. on May 22 at the Eastview High School Performing Arts Center\, 6200 140th St. W.\, Apple Valley. This is the concert band’s second performance after being organized in November. \nThe 65-member ensemble will perform a variety of contemporary and classic wind band literature during the free concert. \nDr. Jerry Luckhardt\, band director at the University of Minnesota\, will guest conduct Rest by Frank Ticheli. Luckhardt also conducts the Medalist Concert Band of Bloomington. Valley Winds associate conductor and co-founder Matt Gullickson will conduct The Wilderness by Rossano Galante. Gullickson directs bands at Eastview. Persuasion\, by Sammy Nestico\, will feature Valley Winds principal saxophonist Vicki Reuter Haack. Haack also serves as the Wind’s vice president. \nPrincipal Conductor and Valley Winds Artistic Director\, Tedd Gullickson\, says the audience can expect an exciting performance. “The Winds will be performing music by Vincent Persichetti and Stephen Melillo\, along with the spiritual\, Let Us Break Bread Together\,” he says . “As a special feature\, music from Puccini’s opera Turandot will conclude the concert.” \nGullickson continues\, “Even though the Valley Winds is a new ensemble\, they are already recognized as an outstanding performance group. They are an amazing group to work with\, wonderful people and amazing musicians.”

Funds raised will benefit nonprofits aimed at supporting the community. \nThe nonprofit recipients benefiting from funds generated by the Live to Give Walk include: \n\nSouth Metro Community Services strives to connect individuals with substance use disorder to vital resources tailored to each person’s unique needs.\nPawsitivity Service Dogs for Veterans is a St. Paul-based nonprofit with a mission of providing service dogs to veterans with PTSD and other disabilities.\nGuild empowers those living with mental illness and/or experiencing long-term homelessness by helping them lead stable\, fulfilling lives in their chosen community.\nEagan Rotary Foundation helps to support youth in the community with such programs as “Sherri’s Books” along with the annual Ethics Workshop for Eagan High School juniors and seniors.\n\nParticipants may register by visiting eaganrotary.org or facebook.com/eaganrotaryclub and are invited to include family members\, friends and neighbors to sign up. Peer to peer fundraising is encouraged along with creating a team theme and costumes to add to the fun-factor. Each donor giving $100 is rewarded with a Live to Give T-shirt. Costumes will be judged and prizes will be awarded. \nThe 1.1 mile walking path in Eagan’s Central Park is accessible for strollers\, wheelchairs and wagons. \nCheck-in for the event is from 8 to 9 a.m.\, with the start time at 9 a.m.\, rain or shine. A food truck from Hy-Vee with breakfast food ready for purchase will be available. Live music from local band Gus Sent Me will be featured at the Eagan Rotary Band Shell.
