Combine fit, function and fashion to define personal style with prescription glasses.
A pair of prescription glasses makes it possible to see the world. They also influence how the world sees the wearer, so it’s important to find the right style that mixes current trends with staying power.
We asked the opticians at McDonald Eye Care Associates, a family-owned practice that’s served Lakeville for more than 40 years, how to pick the perfect pair with an eye on what’s trending. “There’s nothing more trendy than a perfect-fitting pair of glasses,” says optician Jordan McDonough. “A better-fitting pair of glasses is always going to look better than a trend that might not be made for your face shape.”
After working with an optician to find the perfect frame, there are some popular styles to consider for fall:
Classic Pattern
One style that has staying power and leaves room for color preferences is the tortoise shell. Optician Ben Wick is seeing a lot of this style right now. “Tortoise shells are the most neutral way of doing something interesting, and there are a million different tortoises, so there is something for everyone,” Wick says.
1990s Revival
Wick notes that often what is happening in the overall fashion world is reflected in eyeglasses. With 1990s and 2000s trends reemerging in fashion, glasses are following suit. Fellow optician Laney Warren notes this specifically with sunglasses. “We’re seeing a lot more of the sunglasses being smaller, which was a very ’90s look, becoming way more popular,” Warren says. “On the opposite end, the very big ’80s look, like with aviators, is popular too.”
Always in Style
Just like a little black dress, it’s never a bad idea to have a clean, simple, classic pair of eyeglasses that can go with anything. “The Kempers, from the Erkers brand, are our bread-and-butter frame,” Wick says. “It’s a frame that can complement anyone very easily. They have really nice details and are very well-made.”
Almost Weightless
Sometimes, it’s all about comfort. The barely noticeable, “I don’t even feel like I’m wearing glasses” feel can be the tipping point for some individuals, especially those with heavier prescriptions. The metal and acetate combination creates a durable, yet lightweight feel.
Extra Local Options
There are several Minnesota-based eyeglasses manufacturers, six of which McDonald Eye Care Associates carries in-store. Wick notes that the Minnesota brand options are well-constructed and offer a more identifiable style than a national brand.
